Essaouira is a true year-round watersports destination. However, the weather and ocean conditions shift significantly between seasons. Depending on whether your priority is surfing pristine Atlantic swells or kitesurfing with high trade winds, you should plan your arrival carefully.
Summer Season (April to October): Kitesurfing Peak
During the summer months, the Moroccan trade winds (known as the Chergui) blow strongly from the north/north-east. This provides highly reliable 20-30 knot winds, making the bay a world-class playground for kitesurfers and wingfoilers. The surf is generally smaller and gentle, which is ideal for beginner surf lessons.
Winter Season (November to March): Surfers' Paradise
Winter brings massive North Atlantic groundswells to the Moroccan coastline. The wind drops, resulting in clean, glassier conditions. Spot heights at Sidi Kaouki and Le Phare reach overhead heights, offering excellent surfing for intermediate and advanced riders.
Spring & Autumn: The Best of Both Worlds
Transition months (like October and March) often offer a beautiful balance: moderate winds in the afternoon for foiling/kiting, and good morning swells for clean surf sessions.
Coach Summary
If you want to kitesurf or wingfoil, visit between May and September. If you want to surf green waves, come between November and March. Our school operates 365 days a year to guide you.
